I joined the
faculty of the Philosophy Department at the University of Georgia
in 1973 and later served for ten years as Head of the Department.
I was the founding Director of the Artificial Intelligence Center,
a member of the Linguistics Faculty, and Undergraduate Coordinator
for the cognitive science major. I held visiting positions at the
University of Tuebingen, the University of Stuttgart, and Antwerp
University. My research and teaching have focused on philosophy of
language, logic, automated reasoning, and knowledge-based systems.
I was appointed Franklin College Professor at the University of Georgia
in 2001, and retired in 2004. I continue to work on projects at the
University. Most recently I have been working on defeasible justification
in epistemology and normative theory and I have been co-teaching a
short course in business ethics with Warren French in the UGA Executive
MBA program. My non-academic interests include duplicate bridge, steam
locomotives, and garden railroading.
