Diagram each argument. Does each argument comply with the Rule of Grouping and the Rule of Direction?
(1) Joe missed class yesterday and (2) the prof distributed an important handout. (3) Joe needs to borrow the handout from someone. (4) Jane is in Joe's class, and (5) Joe needs to return the umbrella he borrowed from Jane. (6) Joe will probably visit Jane this evening.
A new car costs a lot of money. You need your money for tuition and your dorm fees. So you shouldn't buy a new car. Besides, your old car is still in good shape.
Ferguson shouldn't have any cavities. He uses Grin toothpaste. Grin fights cavities. In clinical tests, subjects who used Grin had 87% fewer cavities.
I can't drive you to class today. You'll have to walk. Better take an umbrella. There are dark clouds and the paper says rain.
Congress won't cut Social Security cost of living increases. If it did, then at least five senators who are up for re election next year would have to vote for the cut. But this would jeopardize their chances for re election. You'll never get five senators to do that. If the cost of living increases are left in place, the Social Security system will go bankrupt. So you young people will never collect Social Security.
