PHIL 1500 - Critical Thinking
Unit 3: Analogical Arguments
Dr. Donald Nute

Exercises

For each of the following arguments, identify the target subject, the target attribute, the comparison set, and the comparison attribute(s). Then evaluate each argument using the six criteria discussed above. Think of ways that the premise or the conclusion of these arguments might be altered to strengthen the arguments.
  1. Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus are all gas giants. All of them have rings. Neptune is also a gas giant. It probably has a ring, too.
  2. When I took chemistry, I had pneumonia. I missed a lot of classes and made a poor grade. When I took physics, I broke both legs in a car accident. I missed a lot of classes and made a poor grade. Now I am taking astronomy and I have a cold. I probably should drop the class.
  3. Mother Theresa and Albert Sweitzer both smiled a lot, and both were very kind people. Bill Clinton smiles a lot. He is probably a kind person.
  4. The Toyota Corolla, the Honda Civic, and the Nissan Sentra are all small cars with four cylinder engines, and they are all very reliable. The Daewoo Lanos is a small car with a four cylinder engine. It is probably very reliable.
  5. Benjamin Netanyahu once said, "Saying you are not antisemitic, you are only anti-Zionist, is like saying you are not against Americans, you just don't think America should exist."
  6. Saying the terrorists who attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon are Muslims and your neighbor is a Muslim, so your neighbor is probably a terrorist, is like saying the people who blew up the federal building in Oklahoma city were Americans and you are an American, so you probably blow up buildings.
